Incognito, Steve Winwood, Hamish Stuart from the Average White Band, Omar, Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, Norman Jay MBE, Jazzie B OBE, Danny Rampling are just a few bands and artists Russ has performed along side with as a drummer and percussionist.
2022 was busy year touring Switzerland, Spain and the UK with Incognito including playing Glastonbury with Incognito and Carl Cox. On top of this Russ recorded percussion on Michael Gray’s new album material which provided four number one dance records on Traxsource so far. Also continuing to DJ Russ held the summer residency at The Beach Café and Funktifino.
In 2018, Russ toured Germany, Spain, Denmark, Azerbaijan and the Netherlands with Incognito and finishing the year playing with them at Ronnie Scott’s on New Year’s Eve for the second year in a row.
In 2017 Russ played in Italy, London Jazz Café, and France with Incognito as well as playing on an EP released by Bluey from Incognito on his own Splash Blue label.
Also in 2017 Russ performed for the touring Stevie Wonder tribute show, ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ as well as performing the famous snare drum solo ‘Crazy Army’ at the Bob Armstrong Memorial concert along side Steve White, Pat Garvey, Pete Riley, Darrin Mooney and Simon Mellish.
2016 Russ set up his own publishing company and released two play-along books with Steve White featuring full transcriptions of Steve’s playing on the Trio Valore and The Family Silver albums with the book launch at the London Drum Show.
In 2015 Russ toured China endorsing Premier Drums performing drum clinics and master classes across the country. Russ also co-hosted a drum clinic with Steve White as well as performing at events for Bear Grylls, Chris Evans and TFI Friday, Piers Morgan, the European Games in Azerbaijan, the ES TV Awards and the BAFTAs with Leonardo De Caprio, Kate Winslet, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Amy Adams to name a few in the audiences.
Russ began his career graduating in Sound Recording and Music Business at Kingston University, as well as Music Performance from Drumtech where he received the award for ‘Best performing Student’. Russ started out in the industry working as an A&R assistant at Positiva and EMI Records before moving into playing percussion for the Ministry of Sound and playing drums for numerous West End theatre productions and the show band for the Holland America cruise line.
As a percussionist Russ has appeared on a host of record releases and remixes as well as playing live alongside DJs such as Danny Rampling, Jazzie B, Norman Jay, Joey Negro, Todd Terry and Kenny Dope to name a tiny few. Live performances have toured Europe, Hawaii, Mexico and shared the stage with Courtney Pine, The James Taylor Quartet, Ola Onabule, The Players and Trio Valore.
In 2003 Russ founded his own drum school, Drumheadz, and works closely with many schools and private students teaching drums. Russ’s own teachers include Bob Armstrong, Steve White, Ralph Salmins, Ian Thomas and Robin Jones. Russ continues to play at private events, Jazz gigs as well as co-coordinating the successful function band ‘The Freestyle Funk Collective’ and co-promotes, plays percussion and DJs at the South Coast’s longest running club night ‘Funktifino’.
